About Tupperware About Tupperware

First offered for sale in 1946, Tupperware was developed by Earl Silas Tupper. He created plastic containers that would form an air tight seal to keep food fresh, longer. He invented and patented the burping seal.

Unfortunately, sales were not incredible in the beginning, most likely because people didn't know how to use the "burping" seal unless it was demonstrated. Noticing a lot of sales generated by a woman by the name of Brownie Wise, he eventually teamed up with her and realized her success came from a new form of selling... parties!

The first Tupperware party occurred in 1948 and soon the Tupperware brand was a success! Why was the model of selling so popular? The war has just ended and women were being encouraged to return to the kitchen. Jobs in factories or working as secretaries weren't nearly as appealing as earning some extra money from your own home could be!

Popular vintage Tupperware products were the Dip 'N Serve Serving Tray, The Party Bowl, the Wonderlier Bowl, the Pie Taker, and the Jel 'N Serve.

In 1958, Tupper sold the company for a cool sixteen million dollars! Tupperware remains an incredibly popular housewares company even today, still offering the air tight containers for food storage. They even offer a lifetime guarantee in most countries!

To care for your vintage Tupperware containers, do not put them in your microwave and keep them away from high heat. Made of plastic, these containers easily warp and melt. Also, it is advisable not to put your containers in the dishwasher or you may find that the lids no longer fit onto the containers. The plastic can absorb strong smells and may stain from dark liquids. Wash with warm water and soap to keep your vintage Tupperware looking like new!
